Wow, WOW! Beowulf is one of those amazingly bad movies that was worth the time and the Netflix slot. Unintentional comedy can be wonderful.

It's been a loooong time.

I never have been very good at regularly writing in journals—paper or digital—and often forget about them until someone pokes me to write.

I've been poked, so here's a short rundown of the last few months.

1. Graduated Cornish College of The Arts in May with über honors.
2. Got a job that I really like.
3. Spent a lot of time with family I had been neglecting while at Cornish.
4. Travelled out of the country.
5. Got engaged to the fellow I've been seeing for the last three years. Getting married here: Salish Lodge

Back in School

Scott I received your nudge.
School has started back up…ok so it's been in session for sometime now (mid-terms are upon the Cornish populace once again). Things are stressful but certainly manageable. It's nice to know that the upcoming advising appointment will be my last at the school; it's not that I hate this place, but it will be good to be out in the world not spending all waking hours thinking of work work, classes, and homework.
What's up for Thanksgiving? Not sure. I'll probably go to my sister's house. I haven't seen them in awhile. Damn you school! hehe.
Dan's birthday was today, and we all celebrated. Good times, presents, and cake! Hurray! I don't know if we're going to celebrate on the weekend or not…things are awfully busy and the budget is kind of tight, but either way, today was fun.
The homework demon calls. I answer.

Later!

I can't wait for this year to be over. I've been mentally done with everything except Graphic Studio for a couple of weeks all ready. Summer promises good fun, friends, and the start of a kick-ass internship at Modern Dog. I'll be moving soon (hopefully into the apartment that I have my eye on) and Kri-Kins will begin her new graduated life. I'll miss her bunches.

Overall, this year has been kind. I competed for and won a major scholarship and a neat internship. I'm also feeling like my work is coming together. Really happy.

Merit Scholarships

Once a year the Design Department holds what they call the Merit Scholarships. Basically all Freshmen, Sophomores, and the Juniors put together their portfolios each containing 6 of the best pieces they've completed during the year. They are then submitted and judged. This year, my portfolio earned me one of the Krelshimer (I know that I'm not spelling this right) awards. This is excellent news.

Where did the year go? Oscar, I swear it was only yesterday that I was hanging out in the senior studio with you and drawing on Rob's chalkboard for his BFA project. Time is running faster and faster. It's tough to buckle down to accomplish what needs to be done without losing too much of yourself and the opportunites to live fully. Losing touch with valued friends is a very real situation that could be stopped completely if I only took 10 minutes a day to send some e-mails or a couple of quick calls. Hmmm, that's smelling an awful lot like a New Year's resolution to me.

Brent and Cori, it was wonderful to see the two of you Yesterday.

I'm continually amazed at my uncanny ability to waste time. It's like a mutant power gone horribly wrong. Take this journal entry for example. I should really be working on my Graphic Studio campaign so that I have something different to show my instructor when I go to her studio tomorrow to get additional feedback, but instead I'm fettering away the hours in cyberspace. Meh.

What a great guy…

Dan and I went out to dinner at Cafe Maximilien — a French restaurant in Pike Place Market. We ate leisurely and enjoyed the service. All of the wait staff are impeccably trained the majority of which speak French as their primary language. It was nice to talk with them and listen as they communicated reservations, orders, and general business with each other. As pleasant as it was to practice, that paled in comparison to the cuisine and (most importantly) the time spent with Dan. Downtime and gourmet food are luxuries during school, and yet we found the time for both. It was a fitting end to the Typography catalog.

Today, her instructor and her class have experienced first hand her unreliability and her unfailing decision to run when anything gets even remotely difficult. She spends a great deal of her energy whining and complaining about her life yet she works so hard to find and preserve misery in everything. Someone told me that at one point they wanted to tell her to "shut-up and move on" but I know that that wouldn't have done any good. It would have only created more of the hostility that she desperately clings to. She clings to it because it's the only way she knows how to survive. Perhaps (despite all she's done) this is the reason I find myself unable to be angry with her. It's hard to be angry at someone obsessed with drowning themselves. She needs help but as long as she's able to shift her issues onto other people she'll never get it.

Half way done.

The semester is already half way over. When did that happen? It doesn't seem like I've been here for eight weeks already. I was worried about having everyone crammed in the same class, but thus far it seems to be working. Not even the rain cloud has been particularly difficult.

The pace is much different now than it has been in the previous years; we've only completed one project in Graphic Studio and 1.5 in Type. By this time last year we would have had three projects in each class wrapped up. I like that we're able to spend more time on one thing. It doesn't feel so harried and rushed. Don't get me wrong, there are deadlines throughout, and the workload is high but it's more enjoyable. Though there were trying times—that's something one comes to expect from group work—I enjoyed the opportunity to work with R.T. and R.M.. They are both gifted designers and the whole experience was valuable. In the end, everything came together. Any anxieties have been buried. I'm ready for the next project.

Today was a work day in Type class which really meant that it was loud and impossible to work. I'm afraid that I added to that element after realizing that I wasn't going to be terribly productive. R.M and I had fun with playful banter and a rolling chair which resulted in uncontrollable laughter. Twice. I blame it on the bananas. I'll be sure to bring my iPod during the next "work day." Perhaps I'll be able to tune everything out and get some work done. Better yet, I should head to the library.

After the mayhem, z4yph0d and I had a pleasant walk in the rain, and the fresh air did us both some good. The end of the week always leaves us exhausted and I want nothing more than to be at home watching Grey's with him, but work is work. Speaking of work, I got a raise. :D Very very cool.

This year we had another design Charette. It was worth doing because I was able to see what the other groups did, but my personal group experience wasn't the most enjoyable. Both of our design seniors didn't show up and the rest of the group was somewhat apathetic. It fell more like babysitting than collaborating as it was up me to keep things moving and ideas flowing. There was no dialogue. The effort of the freshmen were pathetic. When something major needed to be done it wasn't uncommon to hear:"If the seniors didn't care enough to show, then why should we?" Do they normally rely on others to tell them how to feel or respond to situations? At least there wasn't any fighting—this is where their laziness worked in the group's favor. Ah well. It's all done. There were several groups that I enjoyed watching among them were groups dealing with the words Air, Evil, and Connect. Those rocked my socks. My group was to go 2nd which wasn't too bad. It ensured an early finish. I'm simply glad that we weren't presenting first. That scary position was given to—of course— group 1. The third group to go featured some awesome Photoshop work and a strong idea. But the presentation that I'll remember most was "Connect." David—the Illustration senior—kicked ass.

That's about all for now. Scott, I'll try to update more no promises.

There are always interesting things to do in this city during summer. Because school is out and my evenings are mine, I am free to accept or turn away the freelance work that has been so generously appearing. More importantly, I've been getting to know a few of the people that I've seen but never had time to socialize with. This next semester promises to be challenging, but I'm not wary of its approach.

Though this news is rather late in coming, my 2nd year review went very well. It was based around an honest summary of my growth while at school and the returned marks from the panel were very positive.

My living situation is ideal. Cori is the perfect roommate and having Lyra upstairs is wonderful. Cori, Michael, Dan and I have a softening addiction to Champions of Norrath. I believe a large part of the addiction lies in the fact that all four of us are able to play simultaneously and work together to achieve an end goal. The game itself isn't bad but this important element seals the deal.

More later.

Art History didn't give me any trouble, and I'm happy with the rest of my grades. :D Work is going well; the book that I've spent the last year working on is due this Friday. It's going to be a relief to have that done, but there's always other work that needs to be done. To those I didn't call etc., please accept my apologies. Travellyr et Scotticus, this is mainly directed at the two of you. Things here have finally started to wind down, but even so, I'm sorry that I didn't get a hold of you.

A New Years get together that doesn't involve driving or bar hopping sounds great. Kenners can't get into anywhere fun yet anyway. ;) I'll start making some plans. New Years celebrations always remind me that another birthday is just around the corner. I'm going to drag some people to Todai with me; free food. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hurry home z4yph0d. ^_^

Beyond Intense…

That's what the work load was like this semester. It was really tough hacking and slashing through the number of projects that came due at exactly the same time. It felt as though I was at Helm's Deep repelling wave after wave of dark forces bent upon my destruction. In the end, it was all OK. Better than OK as this was the first semester that I was able to pull an A- out of Drawing instead of having to settle for a B+. The only class I'm concerned about is Art History, but I don't want to worry about that now.

This semester has really made me wonder if I can handle the 17 credits I'm slated for this coming term. Later today, I'm really going to have to have to give this some serious consideration.

z4ph0d is off in the land of Canada but will be returning on my birthday. ^_^ Crikins left today for the eastern side, but she'll be back very soon.

I'm going to bed now.
